About Carol P. McCoy
Carol P. McCoy, Ph.D.Carol P. McCoy is president of McCoy Training and Development Resources, a consulting firm dedicated to improving organizational and individual effectiveness.  She has over twenty-five years experience in Human Resource Development (HRD) in the insurance and financial services industry and in post-secondary education in psychology.  She is also president of a genealogy and family research business, which helps people to discover their roots.

Prior to starting her own business, she was manager of special projects and consulting for UNUM's Training Department in Portland, Maine. Dr. McCoy joined UNUM in 1991 after eleven years with Chase Manhattan Bank, NA in New York City. While at UNUM, she served as performance consultant for service excellence as well as director of training. She managed a small training staff, ranging in size from 1.2 to 5 people, which provided training on core competencies, such as leadership, managing change, communication, and service excellence. At Chase she created and managed a one-person training department, which served international clients in fifteen countries.

Dr. McCoy has designed and instructed numerous training programs in leadership, management development, service excellence, change management, communications, MBTI, resilience, and personal growth.

She has written numerous articles (see Articles/Tools ) on training, dealing with change, management, and communications.

The recognized expert in making the most of scarce training resources, she wrote a book, Managing a Small HRD Department (Jossey-Bass, Inc., 1993) and edited a case book,
In Action: Managing the Small Training Staff (American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), 1998.) She contributed a chapter, "Five Strategies for Managing a Small Training Department" to Patterson’s Training Manager’s Quick-Tip Sourcebook (Wiley & Co., Inc. and IOMA, 2003.)(Click here to read a section—Avoiding Pitfalls in Managing a Small Training Department.) McCoy served as a contributing editor to IOMA’s Report on Training Programs.

As a specialist in training other trainers, Dr. McCoy teaches "Introduction Training and Performance Consulting" as part of the Train the Trainer Program at the University of Southern Maine's Center for Continuing Education. She also taught "Managing Training and Development" as part of the Human Resources Certificate Program for USM for many years. Dr. McCoy frequently speaks at ASTD Conferences. On May 20, 2003 she will present a workshop — Small Training Department—Big Impact Click here! at the ASTD International Conference in San Diego, California. In 2002, Dr. McCoy was a featured speaker at the 2002 ASTD International Conference in New Orleans. She presented a full-day Pre-Conference Workshop, "Small HRD Department—Big Impact", which was attended by participants from the United States, Africa, Indonesia, Korea, and the US Virgin Islands.

Prior to working in training, Dr. McCoy taught psychology at various colleges in the New York City area. She served as Chairperson of the Social Science Department of a Nursing School in the Bronx for several years.

She obtained her doctorate in psychology from Rutgers University, New Jersey, specializing in early childhood memories as a diagnostic tool. In graduate school she earned a teaching scholarship and completed an internship at the Rutgers Mental Health Center. Her masters thesis was on children’s humor. She earned her B.A. from Connecticut College, majoring in psychology. She completed her certification to interpret the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) through Otto Kroeger Associates in Fairfax, Virginia. She has also studied psychology through the New York Center for Psychoanalytic Training.

A past member of the Maine ASTD Chapter's Board of Directors, Dr. McCoy served as Chairperson of the 2000 Maine ASTD Conference, "Maximize Organizational Performance by Developing People for the 21st Century" on June 29-30, 2000 in Portland, Maine. An active member of ASTD, Dr. McCoy is a frequent conference presenter, focusing on managing a small HRD department to make the most of your resources, developing trainer skills, improving communication skills, and enhancing your change management and leadership skills. Following are highlights of some of her workshops and presentations.

Recently, she spoke on Small Department: Big Impact at the 1998 ASTD Conference in San Francisco where she also gave a "Chat With An Author" about her recent book, "In Action: Managing The Small Training Staff". Initially, she presented Creating a Small and Effective Training Department at the 1989 ASTD Financial Services Conference and Managing a Small HRD Department at the 1994 ASTD International Conference and at the 1993 local ASTD Conference in Portland, Maine. These workshops were based on her book, "Managing a Small HRD Department".

Dr. McCoy spoke on Using 360 Degree Feedback as a Leadership Development Tool at the International Quality and Productivity Conference in Washington, DC in 1996, and on Face to Face Communications Skills to communication executives at the CCM Conference in Seattle, Washington in 1993.

She has conducted workshops on Developing Training Delivery Skills (how to develop training skills of non-trainers and trainers) at the ASTD International Conferences in 1995 and 1996, and at the Maine Conference in 1995. The ASTD presentations (1994-1996) were all audio taped.

Also, Dr. McCoy will speak on Feedback Is a Gift at the University of Southern Maine's annual Women in Management Conference in Portland, Maine. (Click here.) In previous years she has spoken on Increasing Your Resilience in the Face of Change and on Change Management and Leadership at the Women in Management Conference in Portland, Maine.

A sampling of some of her public workshops include "Your Attitude Makes the Difference", at the Maine Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals, "Understanding Your Conflict Style," and "Becoming a Smart Negotiator" at the Fall Conference of the Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals in San Antonio, Texas. She gave a workshop on "Increase Your Resilience in the Face of Change" at the Maine Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals meeting.

On a personal note....


Dr. McCoy enjoys walking, gardening, music, and genealogical research. She is an avid baseball card collector and baseball fan, who follows the New York Yankees. She recently began her own business in conducting genealogy and family research, Find-Your-Roots.com.
